NORTH WEST VOLUNTEERS WARM 20,000 HEARTS

,600 volunteers share festive cheers and green living practices
with low income residents

,600 community and corporate volunteers will partner North West Community Development Council (CDC) in a collective effort to spread festive cheers over 3 weeks to warm 20,000 hearts residing in 6,500 rental units in the North West District in an annual flagship event, WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks between 12 and 26 January 2019.  The Launch of WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks will be graced by Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs & Law & Adviser to Chong Pang GROs held at Chong Pang Division on 12 January 2019. Media arrival is 10.30am at Blk 162 Yishun Street 11, S760162.

In addition to distributing festive packs and home improvements over these 3 weeks, North West volunteers will be sharing with residents on green living practices via an e-flyer which could be shared digitally with residents at a click through their mobile phones in an effort to nurture an environmental conscious community. The e-flyer will highlight green living practices such as ways to reduce household energy and water consumption as well as to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient LED lightbulbs as part of the Switch and Save – Use LED @ North West initiative with National Environment Agency (NEA).

Under this Switch and Save – Use LED @ North West initiative, one and two-room households in North West District will each receive a letter with a $25 voucher encouraging residents to adopt the usage of LED lightbulbs. Residents will receive the letter in January 2019 and they can redeem LED light bulbs from participating retail stores by 31 December 2019. As LED lights have a longer lifespan and consume less electricity, households will be able to reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time.

The volunteers involved are from Corporate partners, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) schools, Voluntary Welfare Organizations (VWOs) and Grassroots Organizations (GROs). Student volunteers from Republic Polytechnic will also be conducting a survey on the perception and importance of skills upgrading during their house visits in Gambas Division. The survey aims to find out more about the residents’ knowledge and experiences on skills upgrading. Students will also be encouraging residents to attend the SkillsFuture Advice @ North West workshop where the residents can learn how to utilise their SkillsFuture credits.

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs & Law & Adviser to Chong Pang GROs, says, “WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks is a good platform. It brings schools, partners and volunteers together to help the community. During this festive season, we are helping 20,000 residents – festive cheer and home improvement services. We thank the stakeholders for their contributions all these years.”

Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, says, “Over the next 3 weeks, 1,600 volunteers will be sharing green living practices with 6,500 households via their handheld electronic devices. Furthermore, residents can share this information seamlessly with their family and friends. This innovative approach will help reduce our carbon footprint as we do not have to print brochures and pamphlets. We would like to also thank our volunteers who take time off to plan for the campaign; and Club-100@ North West donors and well-wishers who have contributed over $367,000 worth of festive packs and home improvements.”

The WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks programme provides a platform for community and corporate volunteers to give back to the community by engaging low-income families through house visits, and also in packing and distributing the WeCare Festive packs. This year, 47 corporate and community partners have come forward to support this initiative, in which, 25 partners have been supporting this initiative for at least 2 years. Some partners are extending their help beyond the packing and distribution of festive packs by providing household items, home improvement services, organising block party or even spring cleaning services for the families residing in these rental units.
