From Obstacles to Opportunities: Embracing Technology in Traditional Industry
1 April 2026
What was once traditional gatekeeping for the security industry is now high-tech operations powered by surveillance systems and real-time data. Sivamani Taigrajan has witnessed this transformation firsthand – from her early days in the field to her current role as a Security Supervisor at AETOS, overseeing operations at an Integrated Operations Centre. Her journey proves that in today’s landscape, technical competence defines professional success.

Your father inspired your career choice, tell us about that!
My father always believed in the value of service. He’d say, “Choose work where you could make a real difference.” Security offered exactly that: I’m not just standing watch, I’m protecting our community. It was a complete career shift, but his advice gave me the courage to contribute to something bigger than myself.
The perception of security work was also quite different then…
Yes, people largely saw security as a retirement job, something you did at the end of your career. It wasn’t sought-after because there didn’t seem to be room for growth or a real future.
How did the industry change that?
The Progressive Wage Model (PWM) was the turning point. It created clear career pathways. We now have structured training and progressive wages that reward experience and skills. PWM opened paths from ground roles to management positions, completely transforming how people view this profession.
The security industry has transformed dramatically. Was adapting to new technology intimidating?
Honestly? It was. It felt like learning a foreign language as I had no experience with real-time data dashboards and surveillance systems. When I joined AETOS in 2024, the hands-on training at their Integrated Command Centre made all the difference.
The trainers patiently showed how technology supports decision-making and enhances situational awareness. I learnt to see these tools as partners, not obstacles. Once I mastered the systems, I realised they make us better at our jobs.

Weren’t you afraid that you might be “too old” for such high-tech skills?
Well, age is just a number when you're willing to learn! Sure, it was challenging, but I didn’t let fear stop me. Now, I'm the one guiding younger officers through the same systems that once intimidated me. It’s incredibly rewarding.
How has continuous learning shaped your career growth?
My philosophy is simple: if there’s an opportunity to learn, take it. Courses aren’t just box-ticking exercises; they keep me current. Each new skill becomes a stepping stone upward, proof that I can handle more responsibility. This approach has taken me from ground-level operations to overseeing operations and leading a team at our client’s Integrated Operations Centre.

You also serve as a leader within the Union of Security Employees (USE). How do you balance responsibilities with work and family?
Planning is everything. I schedule deliberately so I can give full attention to every part of my life. At home, small rituals keep me grounded, like cooking dinner and spending time with my husband and our cats. My husband's support makes it all possible. He understands the industry’s demands and never makes me feel guilty about the time I dedicate to my profession.

You are an inspiration to others considering careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Any tips for women looking to do the same?
Just do it! Don’t let gender barriers stop you from exploring your potential. Most of these industries aren’t about physical strength – they’re about problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, areas where women naturally excel.
Security specifically is evolving rapidly with new technology and specialised roles, creating plenty of opportunities for diverse perspectives. If you're drawn to meaningful work where you can make a real difference, this industry might be for you.
What’s your ultimate advice for those doubting their ability to advance in a rapidly changing economy?
Progress isn’t overnight, but it happens when you’re willing to learn and adapt. Make the most of every training opportunity and embrace change! With the right attitude and aptitude, advancement isn't just possible – it is a certainty.
