When One Door Closed, Another World Opened: An Unexpected Path to Fulfilment
1 April 2026
At 45, with 20 years of manufacturing experience, Zulaiha thought she was secure. One retrenchment notice triggered her deepest anxieties: How would she pay the bills? Did her skills still matter? Was there any hope for her future? Yet, what began as a painful setback eventually became an opportunity to reset her career and rediscover her purpose in healthcare.

What was on your mind when you were retrenched in 2023?
Everything felt sudden and unreal. I was anxious about financial stability and how to break the news to my family. There was also anger! After so many years of hard work, I felt undervalued.
When did the breakthrough moment come, and how did you channel that into your next steps?
I gave myself time to process the emotions. It was challenging, but after some time, I started to see it as redirection rather than failure. So, I thought about what I wanted to do, visited career fairs and consulted a career coach. After that, I explored options that better suited my strengths and experience.
So why pivot to the healthcare industry?
You know, I initially thought about looking for an admin job. But I was reminded of the care shown by the healthcare professionals who looked after my father. Their dedication to serving others was something I admired. So, I decided to join the profession so that I could help other people too!
Manufacturing to healthcare – that’s quite a pivot! What fears did you have to overcome this?
Healthcare was unfamiliar territory. I wasn’t sure if I was cut out for it as it requires technical skills. To build my confidence, I enrolled in a Therapy Support course. It provided me with the structure and clarity I needed to overcome my apprehension.
As for having to go back to school again, I was afraid I might be “rusty”. But I believe that learning is a lifelong journey and mistakes can be opportunities for growth. The support from my course mates and trainers helped a lot too. I wasn’t starting from zero – I had soft skills like emotional intelligence and problem solving that are useful in the healthcare setting.
